Description:
Five (5) 18th Century original China Trade Watercolors on what appears
to be Pith paper depicting tradesmen:
(1) A Butcher
(2) A House Painter
(3) A Lacquerman
(4) Making Gold Leaf
(5) Stowing Coarse China Ware
On a note attached to the reverse of one painting, states the
following: (see image)
"This book contains original watercolors done in China in 18th
Century before the rice paper prints. The titles were evidently put on
with pen and ink in England as it shows the English way where 2 S's
are in a word the first one is always [example] as shown in some of the
plates. Evidently some of these paintings were used to make the early
plates that appear in Book of Chinese Customs & Trades in the 19th
Century." - Framed watercolors on Wall
These works were inherited by my Uncle from a Great-Aunt from Kilgore
Texas in the late 1950s. They subsequently were inherited by my Mother
upon my Uncle's death in 1987. The label states "Elizabeth Creiger
- Set of 6", however when they arrived from the Great-Aunt's
estate, there were only 5.
Dimensions:
The framed dimensions are 15 3/4" x 19 1/4", the inside dimensions are
approximately 9" x 12" each. They are framed in a gold bamboo style
frame which appears to have been done sometime in the early-mid 1950s.
They are stamped: Speedy Picture Framing & Paint Shop 1703 Telephone
Rd. W. 3-4248.
Condition:
The condition appears good. There appears to be a light haze on the
reverse of the glass, which appears not to have harmed the works.
There has been no restoration done, and they have been stored in a
closet for the past 18 years.
