Alvin-

Thanks for posting the pics. ( http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/hosting/ ,
files starting with "Will")

Two of them are updates to the last knife I made (Will5c.jpg and
Will5d.jpg). I made a sheath for it, copied from one of AG Russell's
knives (the Pocket Woodsman, or something like that). It's made to go
in your back pocket.

The other pictures are of the shop, including:

-Willforge.jpg - my forge and burner. It's a Reil burner
(http://metalcast.boorman.us/reil_1.html) and a freon-tank forge
(www.frontiernet.net/~gnreil/minifor1.shtml - this website doesn't seem
to be working right now, but if you search for it on google, they might
have a copy of it cached).

The freon-tank forge w/ the Reil burner works amazing, though. I lined
the tank w/ 2 layers of Inswool or Kaowool from a ceramic supply store
and plugged the front and rear holes w/ pieces of inswool w/ smaller
holes to hold more heat, and propped up the burner into a hole in the
side, and I was set. It sure heats up my basement pretty quick :).

I'd definitely recommend the Reil burner if you're looking to do some
forging. I pretty followed Brian Boorman's step by step instructions
on http://metalcast.boorman.us/reil_1.html . The hardest part was
flaring the end piece (I think I heated it up and hit it onto the nose
of my cheap anvil) and finding a propane pressure regulator for a
reasonable price. A local Ace Hardware ended up having what I needed.

-Will_anvil.jpg -RR track anvil w/ attached cheap anvil for just
pounding the snot out
of things w/ out worrying about denting up my nice RR track. Both are
bolted to the pile of scrap 2x10 or 12 using threaded rods all the way
through.

-Willonebrickforge.jpg- my first forge, the one-brick forge from
Goddard's $50 Knife Shop
(great book!)

The one brick forge works pretty well. I use a regular Bernz-o-matic
torch propped up w/ 2x4's to be pointed straight into the hole in the
side. I don't think I ever tried welding w/ it, but it would probably
be hard to get a nice clean weld because it will only get about a 2 or
three inch section of knife-sized steel hot enough to forge at a time,
and I'm not sure it would get even that much hot enough to weld.

-Willcabledamascus.jpg- my next (and currently neglected) project of
making wire damascus from steel cable. I welded a piece of the cable to
the end of a long
piece of re-bar (to have something to hold on to) and then forge
welded it (or whatever it's called) using 20 Mule Team Borax for flux,
and then used a grinder to clean it up and check the welds. Its ready
to be forged into a knife, but I don't know when I'll get around to
it.

These are really nice :

For a small paring/utility, and :

for heavier wood working and meat work with the dropped profile and swept
edge profile.

I'm glad you like the designs. I'll take that as a pretty decent
compliment, given your apparent expertise on knife design (I really
like you website, by the way).

Thanks. I should overhaul it visually but I am fairly disinterested in how
it looks, I go mainly for content. There are some really stellar ones out
there, this is probably the best done one I have seen :

Oooo... that was made by my email-buddy Zvi! :)

He's a website designer of the highest order...
so no wonder it caught your eye as "well made"? :)
