I recently had someone contact me from the U.K., stating they wanted to buy
some of my art. Through some negotiations, we arrived at a price, and worked
out shipping arrangements.
Then it started to get wierd, and I should have dropped everything right
then. The person started getting way too personal, being smart, I held back
from letting out too much personal information. (Good thing!)
As I was waiting for the arrival of the money, she (could have been anyone)
began to ask me about forwarding some money (she had supposedly sent too
much in the money order), to her shipping agent, so that he could be paid to
pick up my art and deliver it. The closer the deadline came, the more
frantic she became, that he was holding much inventory of hers, and would
not release it until he was paid.
By this time, I knew I was going to be living with the art in question for a
while longer.
When the delivery date for the money arrived, I received a terrified email,
that if I could help her, PLEASE!!! (She always used multiple exclaimation
marks, please note)
She only needed me to get some cash togeather, and foreward it to her
shipper in Australia!!!! (Needless to say, between that and the very
Nigerian friend of hers, I dropped the whole thing)
When I bothered (why, I don't know) to email, and explained that I would be
contacting interpol, and knew that it was a scam, she(?) immediately sent
back a reply that I was wrong, and she was sending immediate payment via a
trustable internet transfer service.
Yeah, right.................. I'm waiting....
The point is, don't get your hopes up on internet business situations until
the money is IN YOUR HANDS. Also, be careful how much personal information
you pass on to clients. NEVER, EVER, send your financial information to
anyone on the net. If you send payment via a check, your account number is
in thier hand.
Artists, in general, are a sensitive breed. There are people out there,
making a living at the expense of other people's generosity.
When you think it's getting too weird, get out or back off of the situation
before you get hurt, or your bank account gets drained.
I have had two similar hits, both on the same painting.
Don't be a victim of scammers, play it smart. It's a big internet out there,
and even though most of us play by the rules, some don't.
